Venezuela's main challenge is to strengthen democracy, says Lula

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said, this Thursday (5), that Venezuela’s main problem is to strengthen democracy and offer better living conditions for its population. For Lula, the absence of President Nicolás Maduro, kidnapped and imprisoned by the United States governmentshould not be the main concern at the moment.Venezuela's main challenge is to strengthen democracy, says Lula

“That [volta de Maduro ao país] is not the main concern. The main concern is the following: is it possible for us to strengthen democracy in Venezuela and for the 8 million people who are abroad to return to Venezuela? Are there conditions for democracy to be effectively respected in Venezuela and for the population to actively participate?”, stated the president in an interview with Portal UOL.

The Brazilian president reinforced that South America cannot be the scene of an armed conflict, as is seen in other regions of the planet. “What are we saying to the [presidente dos Estados Unidos, Donald] Trump is that South America is a zone of peace. We don’t have an atomic bomb, we don’t have nuclear weapons. What we want is to grow economically, strengthen the democratic process and improve the lives of millions of Latin Americans. Because Latin America cannot continue to be part of the poor world.”

Lula commented on a conversation he had with Donald Trumpin January, when Venezuela was also approached. The Brazilian defended with his American counterpart that it is up to Venezuelans to determine the direction of their country. “I told President Trump: Venezuelans are the ones who are going to solve Venezuela’s problems. They have to take responsibility.”

Peace Council

Lula also commented on the invitation he received from Trump to participate in the council created by him, called the “Peace Council”, which would have the task of rebuilding Gaza. The president questions the composition of the council, formed without the participation of a representative from Palestine, and with a project to make the region similar to a “resort”.

“I told Trump that if the council is to take care of Gaza, Brazil has every interest in participating. Now, it is very strange that there is no Palestinian at the helm of this council. It is very strange that the proposal presented for the reconstruction of Gaza is more of a resort than of reconstruction of Gaza. I want to know who is going to rebuild the houses, the hospitals, the bakeries that were detonated”, he asked.

“I spoke with the head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, that Brazil has every interest in participating, but the Palestinians need to be at the table. Otherwise, it is not a peace commission”, he added.
