Venezuelans protested in Brussels against Maduro's "illegitimate" swearing-in

Venezuelans in Belgium asked the international community to take a position and declare Nicolás Maduro “illegitimate”; since they consider that it has “hijacked” the institutions and led the nation to lose massive rights and freedoms

Dozens of Venezuelans residing in Belgium protested this Saturday, January 11, in front of the Plaza de l’Albertine, in Brussels, to protest because they affirm that the swearing-in of Nicolás Maduro for the period 205-2031 is a “coup d’état” and makes him in “illegitimate.”

With the slogan “Edmundo president, Maduro criminal”, flags and banners supporting the opposition, the protesters claimed that Edmundo González is the one who should have taken office on January 10 in Caracas.

The presidential elections on July 28 were controversial because the National Electoral Council awarded victory to Maduro, but did not show the minutes to prove that result and the opposition affirmed, with more than 85% of the electoral ballots, that its candidate was the winner.

In statements for EFEVenezuelan Patricia Wallis said: “Yesterday at the inauguration, Maduro managed to proclaim himself president without having proven that he had won the elections, so he carried out a coup d’état.”

The protesters asked the international community to take a position and declare Nicolás Maduro “illegitimate”; since they consider that it has “hijacked” the institutions and led the nation to lose massive rights and freedoms.

Venezuelans in Brussels also condemned the large number of political prisoners that Venezuelan authorities currently hold and said that currently “anyone who expresses their opinion against the Government is imprisoned.”
