Venezuelans marched in Lima to demand the release of political prisoners and elections

Venezuelans living in Peru They marched this Sunday in Lima to demand the release of all the political prisoners in your country. They asked to call free and transparent elections, after the fall of President Nicolás Maduro at the beginning of last January in a United States military operation.

The Venezuelans in Lima attended the call of the Civic Walk through Venezuelamade by the Venezuelan Union in Peru and other groups. They gathered on central Arequipa Avenue to demonstrate in defense of democracy, freedom and human rights. As well as an act of solidarity with the Venezuelan political prisoners, who remain deprived of their freedom “for thinking differently and exercising their citizen rights.”

They ask for the release of political prisoners

The mobilization went to the Venezuelan embassy in Lima, which remains closed after the breaking of relations with Peru following the recognition by the Peruvian authorities of the opponent Edmundo González as the winner in the 2024 presidential elections.

“The presence of Venezuelans in the streets is a clear, responsible and peaceful message: We do not forget our own, we do not accept injustice as normality and we continue to demand a free, democratic Venezuela without political prisoners,” added a press release from the Venezuela-Peru Command.

During the mobilization, several of the attendees commented on the situation in their country, after the military intervention and arrest of Maduro in the United States to respond to drug trafficking charges.

One of the protesters, Richard José Briceño, told EFE that now “Chavismo remains kneeling before the actions that the president (of the United States, Donald) Trump may take to guarantee a quality of life.

Briceño pointed out that to guarantee free and transparent elections in Venezuela, they have to “purge the entire corrupt system in the electoral system” of the country.

He expressed his confidence that the opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner “María Corina Machado will sweep all the votes.” In this regard, he pointed out that in the last elections “they (Chavismo) took over and stole” the vote.

Amnesty law proposal

Regarding the general amnesty announced by the acting president Delcy Rodríguez for crimes committed since 1999, Briceño commented that “they have to know that they have to be tried for crimes against humanity and the chain of command has to be handed over, (given) that they committed many crimes and atrocities in Venezuelan prisons.”

For her part, Joana, a Venezuelan woman who has been living in Peru for 8 years, told EFE that they want the amnesty to be for everyone. Also that El Helicoide prison is destroyed because “that center of terror was the most terrible thing that these destructive people could found.”

“We want there to be total freedom in democracy, to have free elections, for all the political prisoners to be released because this regime completely destroyed it. That is why we are in the diaspora, because we could not endure so much misery,” said the protester.

Meanwhile, William León, who works as an emergency brigade member of the Venezuelan Union in Peru, told EFE that the leadership that is still in power in Venezuela should “give in and be able to give way to a new democracy, a new more participatory government and where the opportunity for all Venezuelans is the same.”

Regarding the amnesty, León indicated that it should be for all those who really need it.

In recent weeks, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry has confirmed the release of at least four Peruvians who were detained in Venezuelan prisons.
