Venezuelan migrants in Peru were sanctioned for not renewing their residence permits. According to the accounts of the Venezuelan Union in that country, about 94,000 nationals are affected by the fines of 12 dollars for each day of delay, which in some cases supposes up to 5,000 dollars of penalty.
This Wednesday, September 28, the Venezuelan Union in Peru asked the president of that country, Pedro Castillo, for an amnesty for migrants who were fined for not renewing their residence permits on time. They argue that the delay was the result of “generalized confusion.”
“Due to widespread confusion, due to misinformation regarding the expiration date of the residence and the confusion generated by an expiration date that is on the back of the immigration card, it is that they did not start the renewal process before its expiration,” said the president of the association of Venezuelans in Peru, Oscar Pérez, at a press conference.

According to the accounts of the association, there are about 94,000 Venezuelan migrants in Peru affected by the fines of 12 dollars for each day of delay. In some cases it supposes up to 5,000 dollars of sanction.
The petition seeks to decree a general process of amnesty or exemption from fines so that those affected can once again obtain their migratory regularization.
The spokesman for the Venezuelan Union in Peru stated that the sanctions “are, at this time, unpayable” for migrants. He points out that they are well above the daily income that each person receives as remuneration for work.
“We appeal to the goodwill of President Castillo and the Prime Minister to evaluate the possibility of decreeing a general amnesty, a general exoneration,” he stressed.
He warned that this situation has caused a series of consequences for those whose documents have expired, such as dismissal from their jobs, immobilization of bank accounts, cancellation of driver’s licenses, impediment to carry out procedures before public and private entities or disaffiliation from social security, among others, reviewed EFE.
