The Catholic temples of Venezuela were transformed this Sunday into the epicenter of a challenge in the face of political persecution. In an act of symbolic and spiritual charge, citizens and relatives of the detainees turned the homilies into spaces of denunciation, demanding under the motto “Freedom for all political prisoners”.
The deployment extended from Caracas to cities such as San Cristóbal and Maracaibo. The attendees, far from being intimidated, carried banners and lit candles for each of the victims of arbitrary detention.
We monitor He noted that the activity occurred at a critical moment, just when the number of political prisoners remains at alarming levels, reaching 811 cases, according to the most recent records of the NGO Foro Penal.
Requests
The day was marked by four fundamental requests that the faithful raised during the masses, mainly by the demand for full freedom for all those detained for political reasons, the cessation of repressive actions against those who dissent from the government, respect absolute to the physical and legal integrity of citizens; and the closure of facilities designated by international organizations as places of cruel treatment.
Although the Unitary Platform has recently confirmed the liberation of 22 people, the feeling in the churches was caution and persistence. The community recalled that 87 foreign citizens or citizens with dual nationality still remain in prison, which keeps international foreign ministries under pressure.
Behind every candle lit this Sunday, There is a family that, supported by the Church and civil organizations, refuses to normalize the figure of “infamy.” While the country is going through a complex transition after the capture of the old authorities, Venezuelans made it clear that national reconciliation goes through the emptying of political dungeons.
