Venezuelan citizens became the most numerous asylum seekers in the European Union (EU) in the first semester of 2025, after a decade in which Syrian nationals were the ones who presented the greatest number of requests, according to a report by the European Asylum Agency published Monday.
Throughout the EU, 399,000 asylum requests were submitted in the first semester, 23% less than the previous year.
The document of the European asylum agency also highlights that Spain became the second community country where more asylum requests were presented between January and June, only surpassed by France.
Asylum requests in the countries of the European Union by Venezuelans grew 31% compared to the same period of the previous year. They tend to request asylum in Spain “due to the common language, the existing diaspora and the tendency of the Spanish authorities to grant them national protection.”
In fact, almost all of the applications were made in Spain (93%). Apart from Venezuelans, applications of Ukrainian citizens (16,000 in total in the EU also increased 29%.

The European Commissioner of Interior, Magnus Brunner, said on social networks that the data reveals a “significant fall” in asylum applications and added that with the migration and asylum pact, “more efficient” procedures are being introduced that will allow to process the requests faster with “few possibilities to get ahead.”
“Our spring proposals will reinforce cooperation with third countries, guaranteeing the effectiveness of returns and reducing pressure on our asylum systems,” Brunner added.
