The islands of Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire, have not had the authorization of flights through the Plan Vuelta a la Patria, implemented by Nicolás Maduro and whose objective is the return of Venezuelan migrants
16 Venezuelan citizens imprisoned in a prison on the island of Curaçao, including men and women, began a hunger strike in recent days as a protest measure to demand that the authorities of that country respect their human rights.
The action that was carried out to ask to be transferred to cells with decent conditions, as well as the relocation of the women to another prison.
Human rights defenders on the island pointed out that all these migrants would be held in the Barak Di IIegal prison,
The hunger strike lasted four days and began in the men’s pavilion, where two sick prisoners were held, one of them with heart problems. The activation of the protest sought to capture the attention of the government of Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas.
The migrants received the attention of the NGO Human Rights Defense Curacao (HRDC), which denounced the restrictions against human rights watchdog organizations on the island.
“The deprivation of liberty of foreigners is the last resort for people seeking protection,” said Ieteke Inchi Witteveen, director of HRDC.
Deportees with stopover in Panama
This Saturday, May 21, the deportation of six Venezuelans (five men and one woman) was completed on a flight that made a stopover in Panama.
“They have not treated well, everything is fine, we cannot take photos and give more details,” one of those expelled told Caribbean Chronicles.
The island’s authorities have not reported the number of deported Venezuelans. One of those expelled is Felipe Hidalgo -fictitious name- 38 years old, a native of Coro, capital of Falcón state. Hidalgo was arrested on May 12 while working on a construction site in Willemstad.
Like many other Venezuelans, he entered the island by sea and without a passport in January 2019. He is the father of a girl and lived with a Curacao citizen, who managed to cancel the trip back to Venezuela for a sum of 1,350 dollars.
“I am very bad, I cry every day, he left Venezuela to get his family forward, I tried to talk with the authorities so that he would not leave, “said Mary Bernardina -his partner- for Caribbean Chronicles.
Suspended
Humanitarian flights have been suspended by the Chavista regime since December 2021. Almost 300 Venezuelans residing in Curaçao were affected by the postponement, when they expected to celebrate Christmas with their families. Some returned through the Dominican Republic and Panama, despite the costs. More than a thousand US dollars are needed to cancel the return.
The Venezuelan regime reported that a total of 29,073 Venezuelans have returned to the nation from 21 countries, through 167 flights and a maritime transfer, within the framework of the Plan Vuelta a la Patria. However, the islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao do not appear in the balance.
