The life of the 40-year-old Venezuelan Johanna Bastidas Terán changed in a few seconds after suffering an accident at work in Peru in which he lost both his hands.
The tragedy occurred in a clandestine shoe sole factory, located in the Los Olivos district of Lima, in which the Venezuelan had been working for a month for 12 hours a day, without a contract, without insurance, or safety equipment.
“I lost both my hands, both the right and the left. I can no longer fend for myself, I can’t do anything, I can’t work. My life changed completely,” Johanna told the Peruvian news program ATV Noticias.
The woman, who is the mother of two young people and the grandmother of four children, was working normally when the machine presented imperfections.
Given this, he asked a colleague for help; however, he turned off the device and they could not remove his hands until almost half an hour later, describes a newspaper report The Republic.
“They made me operate a machine without any training. I received no training to operate this machine. I put my hand to take out some templates and in that the machine went up. When I felt the pressure, I called my partner, but he got very nervous because I was already bleeding and it sounded like my bones were breaking”, he told ATV Noticias.
“My bosses took me to the hospital and there they immediately wanted to amputate my hand up to the top, but my sister did not let that happen. At that time, the owner told her that they will do everything possible, that she will help us, ”added the victim from the clinic bed.
Ask for more support from your employers
The surgeries have already been covered by the owners of the company, but the internment days of Johanna, who earned 240 soles a week, are still pending.
After the work accident in which the Venezuelan lost 95% of her hands, the victim’s husband and sister have stopped working to support and care for her. Given this, she Johanna asked for greater support from businessmen.
“The owners started paying for my operations, I’m already on five. But now I can’t leave the clinic because there is an outstanding amount. Also, I don’t think I’m ready for discharge either, as my hands are still bleeding. I will no longer be able to fend for myself, ”said the mother of the family.
They put a price on their hands
In the interview, Johanna revealed that the lawyer who defends the company where she worked “put a price” on her limbs, given the Venezuelan’s demand for civil damages or compensation.
In this regard, Johanna said that the company’s lawyer, Martha Leo, replied: “Do you know how much a dead person costs, madam, in the Prosecutor’s Office? One dead, S/5,000. A hand, how much do you think it costs? 2 thousand or 3 thousand soles, that’s why I tell you. Here in Peru it is like that”.
Factory owners sued
The owners of the company Kaprichos en Diseño Textil SAC, Edison Daniel Vilca LLano (32) and Pierina Selene Beltrán Ramos (30), were reported to the Public Ministry and the National Superintendence of Labor Inspection (Sunafil).
On June 1, this factory was closed for not having an operating license or a Civil Defense certificate.
However, it continued to operate clandestinely and two weeks after this intervention, one of its workers lost both hands in a tragic accident, reports a note from the portal Trade.
