A group of Venezuelan firefighters, who traveled on September 12 to fight forest fires in Bolivia, rescued 100 “wildlife species” in that country, said the Minister of Ecosocialism, Josué Lorca.
According to one press release released this Sunday, the Minister of Ecosocialism said that, after the rescue, the animals were taken to a shelter site, while stating that the group of firefighters also fought “six events of forest fires that affected 48,000 hectares, which are part of of the Bolivian Amazon.
Likewise, he explained that Venezuelan firefighters concentrated in the department of Santa Cruz, the most affected region according to the Bolivian Government.
Between January and September 2024, seven million hectares were burned by forest fires in this department alone. The figure recorded this year already exceeds the losses reported in 2019, when 5.3 million hectares burned throughout the country.
On Saturday, a new group of 54 Venezuelan firefighters traveled to Bolivia to relieve the 60 who were in the Andean country for 25 days, Lorca said.

On September 30, the Government of Bolivia declared a “national disaster” and opened itself to receiving more international support to contain the environmental crisis. The authorities register fires in Santa Cruz and Beni, mainly in 22 municipalities that impact 55 communities, to which 1,600 firefighters will be assigned.
Fires are a recurring problem at this time of year and the fire is attributed in many cases to “chaqueos”, as burning is known to clear lands that are used for planting or grazing.
