
The Organization of Politically Persecuted Venezuelans in Exile (Veppex) requested this Wednesday to US government to intercede for the “unconditional” release of all political prisoners in Venezuela and end the influence of the Minister of the Interior, Diosdado Cabelloafter the capture of Nicolás Maduro.
“We respectfully request the Government of the United States that, within the framework of its policies towards Venezuela, prioritize and act decisively on these two points: the release of all political prisoners without conditions (and) effective measures to prevent Diosdado Cabello from continuing to exercise de facto power to block democratic changes“said the group in a statement.
Veppex added that the situation “is complex” but maintained that these two requirements are “basic and urgent“to build trust and move towards democratic normalization of the country.
If Cabello’s power is not neutralized, number two of chavismothe organization warned that “any transition will be extremely fragile and reversible“.
Besides, accused Cabello of participating in “drug trafficking activities, corruption and serious human rights violations”.
The group of Venezuelans in exile had asked for the weekend the capture of several senior officials of the Venezuelan regimein addition to Hair: the Minister of Defense Vladimir Padrino Lópezthe interim president Delcy Rodríguez and the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez.
Maduro and his wife Cilia were captured last Saturday during a United States military intervention in Caracas and both have already appeared before a New York court accused of several serious crimes linked to drug trafficking and the use of weapons for criminal purposes.
