Venezuelan Episcopal Conference calls for promoting peaceful social coexistence in the country

Venezuelan Episcopal Conference condemns any violent expression in the country

The Venezuelan Episcopal Conference reiterated the call to respect the rights of freedom of expression and peaceful demonstration, and asked Venezuelans to promote healthy and peaceful coexistence in the country.

The Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) expressed this Thursday, August 15, its desire that Venezuelans promote a “healthy and peaceful” social coexistence in the country, following the protests that took place in the country after the elections of July 28, which generated – according to official figures – some 25 deaths and more than two thousand arrests.

Through its social networksthe CEV reiterated its call to the authorities to guarantee respect for the civic exercises enshrined in the Constitution, such as freedom of expression and peaceful demonstrations that allow the expression of political positions.

This message from the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference refers to the one published on August 7 in which they called for respect for the sovereignty of the people, which was expressed on July 28 and in which they emphasized that ignoring the popular will “is illegal and ethically unacceptable.”

In this text, the CEV points out the Church’s exhortation to value and defend human dignity, having as its center the commitment to the common good and to all legal systems.

Furthermore, the use of violence in demonstrations and the presence of armed civilian groups, which, alongside the security forces, are used to “dissuade” peaceful citizen protests, to restrict freedom of expression and mobilization, along with other arbitrary actions such as raids and arrests of men, women and minors, were rejected.

The president of the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV), Monsignor Jesús González de Zárate, hopes that the country’s social and political conflicts will be resolved in a sincere manner and through peace and understanding.

In an interview given on Monday, August 5th to Union RadioMonsignor González de Zárate asked citizens to maintain faith and hope in civic coexistence and to find ways to resolve ideological differences. He also stressed that in the elections of July 28, Venezuelans gave a “great lesson” in democracy by going out to vote.

“On July 28, the Venezuelan people gave a great lesson. The vocation of this people is a democratic vocation. We chose to participate, we chose to do so in a civic manner in recognition of the differences that exist in the reality of Venezuela, but we seek to resolve the differences through the channels presented by the Constitution and the laws of Venezuela,” said the president of the CEV.
