Venezuelan dies of a heart attack in the Darién Gap

Gabriel Ignacio Guevara Sulbarán is the name of the fifth Venezuelan who dies this month trying to cross the Darien jungleborder between Colombia and Panama, reported the portal Core News. The native of Maracay, Aragua state suffered a heart attack and died, leaving his wife, a widow, and his orphaned daughter.

Before embarking on the journey through Central America, Guevara Sulbarán was in Ecuador trying his luck. The southern country met with some childhood friends and planned the departure for the United States.

Relatives of Guevara Sulbarán told Core News that the last time they heard from Gabriel was on July 14, when he told them that he was entering the fateful jungle: then they lost all communication.

On the third day, the estimated time to cross Darien, they waited for news and heard nothing, until on Wednesday, July 20, they learned of the young man’s death.

They assured that they will do everything possible to repatriate the body, although they recognize that in that jungle the deceased are buried in the area, due to the difficult terrain.

More Venezuelans cross the Darien

The organization Human Rights Watch assured on July 5, in a new report published, that Venezuelans have surpassed Cubans and Haitians as the largest population crossing the Darién in 2022, and now represent more than a third of the total number of migrants who use this road.

The most recent figures from the National Migration Service of Panama show that through the Darién, in the first five months of 2022, 32,797 migrants have entered; of which 16,720 are Venezuelans; In May alone, 9,844 entered; that means that Venezuelan refugees represented 71% of the total.

Meanwhile he annual report of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) revealed that last year 94 Venezuelans died on migratory routes, being the third nationality with the most deaths in the region, after Mexicans (154) and Guatemalans (129).
