Asylum applications by Venezuelan migrants have increased in the European Union and Spain is the main destination for those who arrive on that continent.
According to an article in Europe PressAlso citizens from Peru and Colombia requested asylum. These requests skyrocketed in March and are at “levels close to the all-time high,” according to community statistics.
Only in the third month of 2023, the 27 countries of the European Union, Norway and Switzerland received at least 92,000 asylum requestswith Syrians (10,000) and Afghans (9,500) being the main nationalities that request it, especially in Germany.
On the other hand, the text highlights that among the countries that are growing the most is Turkey (5,900), whose data is now more than double that of the same month of 2022.
Regarding the rise from Latin America, Venezuelan migrants registered at least 6,500 requests, Colombia 6,100 and Peru 2,200. These three countries accumulate 16% of asylum requests in European territory.
All this occurs in a context marked by a general upturn in applications compared to recent years, including those prior to the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic.

In addition, at least 665,000 asylum seekers are currently awaiting a response, 32% more compared to March 2023, with Syrians and Afghans as the main pending nationalities, with 86,000 and 71,000 cases pending.
