Venezuelan activists Luis Alejandro Peche and Yendry Velásquez denounced that there is no progress in the criminal investigation into the armed attack they suffered two months ago in the city of Bogotá

Venezuelan activists Luis Alejandro Peche and Yendry Velásquez, refugees in Colombia for political reasons, denounced that there is no progress in the criminal investigation into the armed attack they suffered two months ago in the city of Bogotá.

Peche pointed out, through a video broadcast on social networks, that to date neither those responsible nor the intellectuals behind the attack, which occurred on October 13, have been identified. Likewise, he assured that the Colombian authorities have not reported any official hypothesis about the case.

“Today we regret to point out the absolute lack of progress in the criminal investigation regarding the case. To date, the material and intellectual perpetrators of the incident have not been identified. We have not even been informed of an official hypothesis by the Colombian authorities,” he said.

The activist called on the authorities of the neighboring country to act more quickly and clarify the facts, which, he stated, would allow responsibilities to be determined and offer guarantees of justice and protection.

Peche and Velásquez also urged the Colombian Foreign Ministry and Migration Colombia to expedite the processes of regularization and protection of Venezuelan migrants, warning that other refugees could be exposed to similar threats.

Both activists were injured after being shot 14 times during the attack. Velásquez, who is a member of Amnesty International, human rights defender, LGBTIQ+ activist and applicant for international protection, had to undergo surgery due to the severity of his injuries.

Although they continue to recover, the activists insisted on the need for greater institutional commitment to clarify the attack and guarantee their safety, as well as that of other Venezuelan human rights defenders in exile.
