Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González began an “international tour” in Argentina, days before the inauguration of President Nicolás Maduro on January 10.
González said he won resoundingly in the close presidential election on July 28, but is living in Spain after the Prosecutor’s Office issued an arrest warrant against him.
The open arrest warrant for González is for alleged conspiracy and other crimes, after Maduro said the opposition was trying to overthrow him in a coup d’état.
This week, the Scientific, Criminal and Criminal Investigation Corps on the social network Instagram issued a notice in which it offered a reward of $100,000 for anyone who provides information about González’s location.
González said on Tuesday that he was convinced that he would travel to Venezuela in some way to assume the Presidency.
The opposition insists that González was the true winner of a July election that was awarded to Maduro by electoral authorities, but officials have not released complete vote counts at the ballot box level.
The Venezuelan opposition, several Western countries and some international organizations have denounced the elections as opaque and have called for the full publication of the ballots, and some parties have openly labeled the process as fraudulent.
The opposition released ballot tallies on a public website that it says show Gonzalez, who left Venezuela for Spain in October, won the election.
