Venezuela thanks Nicaragua for condemning European Parliament interference

The Minister of People’s Power for Foreign Relations, Yván Gil, thanked the National Assembly of Nicaragua this Thursday for its “strong condemnation of the neocolonial action of the European Parliament, which seeks to impose subordinate leaders in free and sovereign nations.”

The diplomat stated that Venezuela “is not a colony of anyone and the Venezuelan people will continue to defend their right to self-determination,” enshrined in the United Nations Charter, according to the website of the Mppre.

In a statement, the Nicaraguan Parliament denounced the “continuous and absurd interference of the European Parliament, which has been characterized by its colonialist, neocolonialist and interventionist policies in matters that do not concern it.”

“We denounce, reject and condemn the spurious Resolution of that Organ of colonialist invasion, on matters that only concern the Venezuelan People, its Institutions, and in which Entities such as that Parliament have nothing to do, whose interventionist blade we have also known, and repudiated, in Our Nicaragua,” reads the text.

The statement came after the European Parliament on Thursday recognized opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, who fled the country and sought asylum in Spain, as the presumed “legitimate and democratically elected president of Venezuela,” in a non-binding text approved with 309 votes in favor, 201 against and 12 abstentions, and which also considered the leader of the extremist right, María Corina Machado, as “leader of the democratic forces in Venezuela.”

In the text, MEPs urged the European Union and its member states to do “everything possible” to ensure that González Urrutia assumes the presidency on 10 January 2025.
