The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has taken the decision to revoke, with immediate effect, the approval granted to the Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil to exercise the representation of the interests of the Argentine Republic and its nationals in Venezuelan territory, as well as the custody of the premises of the diplomatic mission, including its assets and archives, as announced in the joint statement dated August 5, 2024.
The information was released by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic, Yván Gil, through an Official Statement posted on his official account on the social network Telegram, where he details the decision that has been notified to the states concerned through diplomatic channels.
In the letter, the National Government reports that “Venezuela is forced to make this decision motivated by the evidence that exists regarding the use of the facilities of this diplomatic mission for the planning of terrorist activities and assassination attempts against the Constitutional President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros, and against the Executive Vice President, Delcy Rodríguez Gómez, by the fugitives from Venezuelan justice who remain within it.”

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, as the receiving State, takes this measure in accordance with, and in full compliance with, the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963.

Brazil responds
For its part, the Brazilian government received communication from the Venezuelan government of the revocation of its consent for Brazil to protect Argentina’s interests in Venezuela, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports. Foreign Relations of Brazil on its website.
The Brazilian Foreign Ministry notes that in accordance with the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic Relations and Consular Relations, Brazil will continue to safeguard and defend Argentine interests until the Argentine government designates another State acceptable to the Venezuelan government to exercise these functions.
In this context, the Brazilian government stresses the inviolability of the premises of the Argentine diplomatic mission, which currently houses six Venezuelan asylum seekers, in addition to assets and archives, in accordance with the Vienna Conventions.
