The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela issued an official statement in which they reject the pronouncement of the Department of State of the United States of America, in relation to “US citizens legitimately deprived of liberty in the country, for their alleged responsibility in the commission of serious crimes and that, for the most part, they have been convicted and confessed to the crimes they are accused of.”
The letter from the Chancellery of the Republic indicated that, “Venezuela is a democratic and social State of Law and Justice, where the institutions exercise their constitutional and legal powers to investigate and punish, with absolute guarantees of due process, any conduct that implies a crime typified in the national legal system, regardless of the nationality of the alleged perpetrator.” It also states that “citizens of the United States of America are no exception.”
In this sense, the statement states that “it is unfortunate that the authorities of the United States insist on their claim to confer an unacceptable immunity or marque letter to their nationals, in absolute disregard for the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples.”
Finally, the document issued by the Foreign Ministry states that “the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in all circumstances, will enforce the laws of the nation and its democratic institutions.” In that sense, “it claims the open spaces and channels with the United States of America, in search of understanding on issues of the bilateral relationship.”
