The Government of Venezuela categorically rejected the recent statements by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who admitted having authorized the CIA to carry out covert operations in Venezuelan territory.
Foreign Minister Yván Gil described the announcement as an “unprecedented statement” that threatens the peace and stability of the country.
The complaint adds to a wave of diplomatic reactions to what Caracas considers an escalation of war by Washington.

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela rejects the bellicose and extravagant statements of the President of the United States, in which he publicly admits to having authorized operations to act against the peace and stability of Venezuela. This unprecedented statement constitutes a very serious violation of International Law and the Charter of the United Nations, and obliges the community of countries to denounce these clearly immoderate and inconceivable statements.
We observe with extreme alarm the use of the CIA, as well as the military deployments announced in the Caribbean, which constitute a policy of aggression, threats and harassment against Venezuela.
It is evident that such maneuvers seek to legitimize a “regime change” operation with the ultimate goal of appropriating Venezuelan oil resources. Likewise, the US president’s statements seek to stigmatize Venezuelan and Latin American migration, fueling xenophobic and dangerous discourses.
At the extraordinary meeting of CELAC foreign ministers, convened by the Pro Tempore Presidency of Colombia, Venezuela formally presented this complaint and demanded an immediate regional response. Tomorrow, our Permanent Mission to the UN will raise this complaint before the Security Council and the Secretary General, demanding accountability from the Government of the United States and the adoption of urgent measures to prevent a military escalation in the Caribbean, a zone of peace declared by CELAC in 2014. The international community must understand that impunity for these acts will have dangerous political consequences that must be stopped immediately.

What did Trump say?
During a press conference at the White House, Trump confirmed that he gave the CIA the green light to “act” in Venezuela, within the framework of a strategy to pressure the departure of President Nicolás Maduro.
According to reports from The New York Timesthe president would have signed a “presidential finding” that allows the agency to carry out lethal operations or coordinate joint actions with the US Armed Forces, currently deployed in the Caribbean.
Trump justified the measure by alleging that drugs are sent to the United States from Venezuela and that the Venezuelan government had sent prisoners to the country as part of an alleged destabilization plan.
