The Government of Venezuela rejected this Saturday, September 17, the memorandum of the president of the United States, Joe Biden, published last Thursday, which includes the country on the list of major drug transit and production countries.
“In that infamous publication, the faithful fulfillment of the international commitments of the Bolivarian Government, whose tenor to address the permanent fight against illicit drug trafficking has been under the foundations of the United Nations, is unknown,” said Venezuela in a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry.
In its memorandum, the US identifies Venezuela, Afghanistan, Bahamas, Belize, Burma, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Laos, Mexico, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama, Peru and the Dominican Republic as “major drug transit countries” or “illicit drug producers” by 2023.
Foreign Minister Carlos Faría assured this Saturday that the United States authorities “silence” the achievements of the Government of Nicolás Maduro in the fight against drug trafficking.

In the text, published on the website of the State Department, the US indicates that the presence of a nation on that list “does not constitute a reflection of the efforts made by its Government against drugs or the level of cooperation with the United States.”
In addition, he mentioned Venezuela, Afghanistan, Burma and Bolivia “for having demonstrably failed to comply with their responsibility to make substantial efforts during the preceding 12 months to observe the obligations they assumed under international agreements against drug trafficking.”
In this regard, the government of Nicolás Maduro condemned the fact that the United States intends to “persist in the imposition of extraterritorial policies.”
He called the memorandum “inconsistent” and assured that it is a document “of an interfering nature and with a legal deficiency.”
Likewise, he highlighted the “unrestricted and unconditional commitment” of the country against drug trafficking and with the implementation of policies for the seizure and confiscation of illicit substances.
“The Bolivarian Government has achieved, with sovereign policies, the largest seizure and confiscation in history and has waged a relentless war against drug traffickers and irregular groups outside the law, thus registering in 2021 the record of seizure of 51 tons of drugs in more than 5,000 procedures”, the text underlined.
