The National Institute of Aquatic Spaces of Venezuela reported this Sunday that they received in the Port of La Guaira nine of the 16 shipwrecks of the ship Cetus, of African origin, which capsized 130 nautical miles northwest of Aruba.
“We received in the Port of La Guaira the Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier Melba, which brought 9 of the 16 castaways from the Cetus vessel that capsized 130 NM (nautical miles) northwest of Aruba, in waters of the Venezuelan exclusive economic zone” . This was stated by INEA on its Twitter account.
The Venezuelan institution indicated that the rescue and care actions for the shipwrecked were carried out jointly with the Coast Guard Command of the Bolivarian National Armed Force.
Among the people rescued, the agency said, there are three Venezuelans, five Dominicans and one Cuban. Therefore, the rescue actions were addressed in coordination with the consulates of Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
According to information provided by the Curaçao coast guard service to local media, the tanker Cetus, under the flag of the African country of Comoros, capsized at sea last Friday. The vessel’s operational manager managed to give the Japan Coast Guard a distress alert.
Earlier, INEA reported the rescue of four crew members from the Evolución fishing vessel. Since last night they had been reported late last night, after having set sail for fishing between Farallón Centinela and La Guaira on May 24.
“The four crew members and the Pesca Evolución vessel, which had been reported in delay, were rescued safe and sound. They were sighted by the fishing vessel Mi Ángel, who reported that they were anchored in the Plaserito sector, ”said the INEA.
