Venezuela raised its voice on Monday in the Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (Cedaw) for the promotion of gender parity in favor of strengthening women’s rights.
The proposal was presented by the Ombudsman, Alfredo Ruiz, who highlighted the scope and achievements of the work carried out in the promotion, defense and surveillance of the rights and guarantees of women, having as a legal basis what is established in articles 280 and 281 of the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
It should be remembered that the cedaw is a body with 23 independent experts from around the world, in charge of supervising the application of the Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women.
In this sense, during his speech, the General Defender of the Republic highlighted the work carried out by the Legislative Power (National Assembly) for the defense of women’s rights, through the promulgation of laws such as the Childbirth and Humanized Birth.
This text – indicated Ruiz – has made it possible to protect women from obstetric violence.

Prevention of gender violence and equity
During his participation in the session of the Cedaw of the United Nations (UN) in Geneva; Ruiz highlighted that through the National School of Human Rights, diplomas, courses and workshops are given periodically free of charge.
In addition to these workshops, training activities are carried out for the Ombudsman on addressing violence against women, addressing aspects such as gender equity and prevention of gender violence.
Regarding this, the defender stated that – only in 2022 – 1,162 training, education and promotion activities were carried out throughout the national territory, training 42,009 people, 27,650 female and 14,354 male.
In addition, the Ombudsman’s Office has worked together with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) Venezuela to design the Observatory of Indigenous Women for the promotion, defense and monitoring of their rights.
National Gender Justice System
On the other hand, he highlighted the joint work between the Ombudsman’s Office and the justice system, after the installation of the National Gender Justice System.
This justice system is focused on accompanying and ensuring the human rights of women.
He noted that the Ombudsman has recommended to the Venezuelan State to continue promoting gender parity in all popularly elected positions, and promote the National Commission to Guarantee the Right of Women to a Life Free of Violence on a national scale.
Given this fact, she urged the international community to always raise its voice and denounce all forms of violence against women, and not allow any aggression to go unpunished.
