As part of the preparations for the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held in Belém do Pará, Brazil, this November, the Sectoral Vice President for Science, Technology, Ecosocialism and Health, Gabriela Jiménez Ramírez, held a strategic meeting with the Minister for Ecosocialism, Ricardo Molina, with the aim of consolidating Venezuela’s participation in this important international forum.
“This commitment is framed under the leadership and guidelines of President Nicolás Maduro and the Great Mother Earth Mission: a unique global policy designed to integrate and enhance all our national efforts against the adversity of the climate crisis,” said the also Minister for Science and Technology through her Telegram channel.
During the meeting, the axes of the message that Venezuela will take to COP30 were defined, focused on reflection and deep understanding of the global climate crisis, especially regarding the deterioration of natural carbon sinks.
“These ‘lungs’ of the planet (oceans, forests and soils), which absorb half of our CO₂ emissions, are showing signs of saturation, creating a feedback loop that accelerates warming,” said the minister.
Jiménez Ramírez identified several critical points in this environmental emergency, among them the decrease in the carbon absorption capacity of vital ecosystems, which mainly affect the Amazon, “which in some areas already emits more carbon than it absorbs, approaching a point of no return towards savannah.”
Likewise, he warned about the irreversible thresholds facing the planet, which, once crossed, trigger autonomous transformations such as the thawing of permafrost that releases large amounts of methane and CO₂ and the possible collapse of ocean currents, with severe consequences for the global climate.
Finally, he highlighted that the saturation of carbon sinks represents a silent crisis, different from visible climate disasters, but equally dangerous, since it compromises the main mechanism for cleaning the atmosphere.
“From Venezuela, we reaffirm our willingness to act with urgency and determination, as demonstrated by our work preparing for COP30, where we will carry a clear message about the need to reduce emissions immediately and drastically to safeguard the systems that maintain the balance of the planet,” he concluded.
