Venezuela participates in the 17th FAO Commission on Phytosanitary Measures

Venezuela participa en la 17º Comisión de Medidas Fitosanitarias de la FAO

The National Director of Plant Health of the National Institute of Integral Agricultural Health (INSAI), Joan Montilla, participated in the 17th Commission on Phytosanitary Measures of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with the aim of reiterating the commitment in the prevention and control of pests in Venezuela.

On the Twitter social network account, @venefao_pr, it was reported that these pest control tasks are carried out through the Ministry of People’s Power for Productive Agriculture and Land.

Likewise, Latin American and Caribbean countries, together with Venezuela, requested the Secretariat of the International Plant Protection Convention to include as a topic for discussion the disease that affects banana and banana plantations, called “Fusarium FOC R4T”.

It should be noted that the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), approved by the FAO Conference in November 1997, establishes the creation of a Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CMF), with the objective of:

  • Examine the state of plant protection in the world.
  • Determine the necessary measures to combat the spread of pests to new areas.
  • Establish regulations and procedures for dispute settlement.
  • Adopt guidelines for the recognition of regional plant protection organizations.
  • Cooperate with international organizations on matters covered by the convention.
