Within the framework of the celebration of the International Day of People with Disabilities, Venezuela, together with other member states of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), founded, this Tuesday, the Group of Friends of Disability for the areas of competence of this international organization.
This was reported by the Permanent Delegation of Venezuela to UNESCO, through its account on the social network Instagram. “Venezuela, Belarus, China, Cuba, Colombia, Comoros, the State of Palestine, Haiti, Nicaragua, Qatar, Pakistan and Russia met in Room VII of UNESCO Headquarters in the morning hours of this Tuesday, December 3 2024, to formally create the Group of Friends of Disability,” says the aforementioned publication.
The Assistant to the Director General for the Social and Human Sciences sector of UNESCO, Gabriela Ramos, and the Assistant to the Director General for the Africa Priority and International Relations of UNESCO, Firmin Matoko, participated in the meeting convened by Venezuela, who agreed in highlighting the historical importance of the founding of the aforementioned group as a space for coordination and reflection to advance the inclusion of the rights of people with disabilities in the world.
The meeting was also attended by the permanent delegations of Azerbaijan, Chile, Brazil, Nigeria and Uruguay, who expressed their support for the creation of the group and their interest in continuing to support initiatives that promote the inclusion of people with disabilities.
In this sense, the Permanent Delegate Ambassador of Venezuela to the aforementioned organization, Rodulfo Pérez Hernández, explained that the Group of Friends of Disability is a specialized forum to advance an effective dialogue on policies aimed at including disability in its diversity in the different spheres of UNESCO’s competence.
Likewise, the Venezuelan delegation proposed among its tasks to investigate those people, events or activities that have established a milestone in the history of the struggle of people with disabilities.
The Disability Friendship Group would have among its tasks to advance the formulation and consolidation of strategies that allow the inclusion of this vulnerable sector of the population in UNESCO’s programs and Budget 2025 – 2029.
It should be noted that with the arrival of the Bolivarian Revolution, Venezuela has placed itself at the forefront of the inclusion of people with disabilities, promoting a culture in that sense.
