Venezuela defends the peaceful use of nuclear energy

Venezuela, as a founding member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (OIEA), makes great efforts to promote and defend the peaceful use of nuclear energy, as well as the development of nuclear sciences for life, being its motto “atoms for peace.”

During the 69 General Conference of the OIEA, the Deputy Minister and Director of the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC), Alberto Quintero, criticized the presence of a nuclear submarine of the US armed force, in the vicinity of Venezuelan territorial waters, violating the treaty for the proscription of nuclear weapons in Latin America (Tlatelolco 1962), which had managed to convert Latin America into Latin America Free territory of nuclear weapons of the world.

The illegal presence of this submarine seeks to reissue the nuclear threats lived by the world in the 40s and 50s, trying to destroy peace, stability and diplomacy.

Venezuela, from years prior to the creation of the OIEA and until today, has advocated the non-proliferation of weapons or nuclear threats, highlighting in speeches of Humberto Fernández-Morán himself, that the nuclear sciences must develop for the peace and well-being of humanity and not for its destruction, thus, in 1957 the OIEA was born with the purpose of preventing a world tragedy as the lived in Hiroshima and Nagassaky in 1945, the product of the nuclear bombs launched by the United States of America, which ended the lives of more than half a million people and that even today are suffered.

Nuclear technology as a main tool for medical diagnoses

For its part, the Sectorial Vice President of Science, Technology, Education and Health, Gabriela Jiménez, explained that nuclear technologies are today the main tool for medical diagnosis through tomographs, X -rays, nuclear magnetic resonances and mammography, which also covers an important field known as radiopharmacy, this being the only alternative for the treatment of cancer, allowing to save thousands of lives.

Through his Telegram account, Jiménez stressed that these technologies allow the detailed study of animals, plants, bodies of water and structures through their applications in electronic microscopy, magnetic resonance and gammography, “these tools have allowed, for example, the study and control of pandemics through genetic sequencing. The peaceful applications of nuclear energy are multiple and varied.

Venezuela became in 1955 in the first country in Latin America to have an institute dedicated exclusively to nuclear sciences and research, today Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), as well as having a nuclear research reactor.
