Venezuela and Nigeria seek a rapprochement in the electoral sphere

Among the 23 recommendations issued by the EOM-EU, the first mission sent by the community bloc to Venezuela in fifteen years, it also includes “strengthening the sanctioning powers of the CNE through the introduction of a control and sanctions system”

The president of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Pedro Calzadilla, and the Nigerian ambassador to Venezuela, Olorundare Awoniyi, held a meeting aimed at promoting rapprochement between the two nations in the electoral field, the agency reported on Wednesday.

Both officials, according to a message posted on Twitter, exchanged criteria on different topics of interest, aimed at promoting rapprochement in the electoral aspect, although they did not offer more details.

Calzadilla thanked Awoniyi for the participation of the group of international observers from Nigeria in the regional and local elections held last November in Venezuela.

The ambassador pointed out, always according to the electoral body, that after the elections in the Caribbean country he signed a report in which he highlighted the strengths of the Venezuelan electoral system, which he described as one of the “best in the world, with more democratic elements.” .

Some 300 people participated as observers in the regional and local elections last November, including an Electoral Observation Mission of the European Union (EOM-EU), Calzadilla reported at the time.

The president of the organization affirmed that “much broader” invitations were made than in other electoral processes as part of the “extension of guarantees” proposed by the CNE directive, appointed last May by the National Assembly (AN, Parliament).

On February 22, the EOM-EU recommended in its final report that it reinforce “the separation of powers and confidence in the independence” of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) for future elections.

Among the 23 recommendations issued by the EOM-EU, the first mission sent by the community bloc to Venezuela in fifteen years, also includes “strengthening the sanctioning powers of the CNE through the introduction of a control and sanctions system.”
