Diplomatic relations between the two countries were officially established on September 14, 1883, although both nations were united much earlier, as a result of the independence campaign of the Liberator Simón Bolívar and the Grand Marshal Antonio José de Sucre.

Since the arrival of the Bolivarian Revolution and the Change Process in Bolivia, these nations marked a before and after in the integration process. From then on, cooperation diversified into areas such as energy, education, social and culture, among others.

Similarly, they have maintained an active participation in various multilateral spaces, such as the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), among others.

Currently, Caracas and La Paz are working on a broad bilateral cooperation agenda within the framework of the III Venezuela-Bolivia Mixed Commission, installed last Wednesday, after several months of meetings, in which working groups advanced in the concretion of the agreements in strategic areas such as academic, cultural, health, energy and commercial.
