Venezuela achieves historical record in registration and certification of intellectual property

The president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, highlighted the emergence of about 19 thousand new brands in the country as part of the economic recovery of the nation.

Accompanied by the executive cabinet and representatives of the national business, the head of state said that this progress is a sign that Venezuela has the ability to walk with its own feet in the economy of the 21st century.

This was reported in the installation of the National Council of Economics, an event held on January 20, 2024 in La Carlota, Miranda State.

“You have to make a great leap in production and quality. Today we start with the first activation and acceleration measures of the first transformation related to economic strengthening and deployment of productive forces, ”said President Maduro.

7 transformations plan strategies

In the context of the Plan of the 7 Transformations (7T), promoted by President Maduro, which in his first phase emphasizes the strategic use of state resources, to promote prosperity in Venezuela, the Ministry of Popular Power of National Commerce, to Through the Autonomous Intellectual Property Service (SAPI), it achieved in 2024 record figures in the registry and certification of copyright, brands, patents and protected geographical indications, thus marking a significant increase compared to the 2020 to 2023.

Increase in copyright certificates

According to the report of national intellectual property indicators for 2024, successful strategies have been implemented by the Autonomous Intellectual Property Service (SAPI), which are in line with the policies of the Bolivarian Government.

These policies seek to facilitate the registration and certification of copyright (DA) so that Venezuelans can protect their works and creations for free.

As a result of these initiatives, a Total of 1,752 copyright certificates in 2024.

This represents a remarkable increase of 412% compared to the total of 827 certificates granted in previous years.

IMPULSE TO VENEZUELAN CULTORS

It is important to note that, of this total of 1,752 certificates, 1,540 authors and farmers who are part of the great living mission Venezuela, my beloved homeland, were directly favored.

This effort is promoted under the direction of the National Minister of Commerce, Luis Antonio Villegas, and reflects the government’s commitment to the promotion and protection of cultural creativity in the country.

These results highlight the positive impact of SAPI’s strategies and provide a new impulse to artistic and cultural creation in Venezuela.

Increase in brand granting

On the other hand, strengthening the mechanisms for the protection of intellectual property for this exercise 2024, 19,983 brands were granted through the publication of industrial property bulletins, which means an increase of 120 %, in reference to the year 2023.

Protection of economic areas and zones

The Autonomous Intellectual Property Service (SAPI), under the direction of Hendrick Perdomo, has made important advances in the transformation and protection of economic areas and zones in Venezuela.

In 2024, the consolidation and registration of organizations of farmers and producers was promoted, managing to deliver the following certificates of protected geographical indications (PGI):

  • Patanemo cocoa
  • Margarite pepper
  • CACAO CARENERO
  • Cocuy Larense

In addition, the SAPI is currently evaluating the requirements presented by the producers of:

  • • ⁠⁠ Mérida Café
  • • Kavitepuy
  • • ⁠⁠ Yaracuy avocado

It is estimated that these certificates will be granted during the course of 2025. These efforts underline Sapi’s commitment to strengthen the identity of our national products and support agricultural development in the country.

Distribution of certificates by sector

In the recent report of comparative statistics of intellectual property, a total of 1,752 copyright certificates (DA) have been granted, distributed as follows:

  • 42% – Literary works
  • 26% – Musical works
  • ⁠⁠24%- Visual art
  • 3%- phonographic production
  • 2% – audiovisual and radio
  • ⁠⁠1% – Computer programs and databases
  • 1% – Acts and contracts
  • ⁠⁠1% – artistic interpretations and executions

On the other hand, 19 983 brands have been granted in different sectors, distributing as follows:

  • 21% – Services
  • 22% – manufactures
  • 13% – Food and drinks
  • 12% – Pharmaceutical
  • 11% – Science and Technology
  • 7%- Recreation and maintenance
  • 5% – industry
  • 4%- Chemistry
  • ⁠⁠3% – Transport
  • ⁠⁠2% – Medicine

These data show the diversity and dynamism of intellectual property in Venezuela, as well as the interest of creators and producers in protecting their works and brands.

In 2024, a total of 525 patents were granted, distributed by sector as follows:

  • 36% – industry
  • 31% – hydrocarbons
  • ⁠⁠10% – Transport
  • ⁠⁠8% – Chemistry
  • 7%- Science and Technology
  • 4%- Metallurgy
  • 3% – Medicine
  • ⁠⁠2%- Agriculture

This distribution reflects the participation of various sectors in innovation and technological development in Venezuela.

New public service strategies

The Directorate of the Autonomous Service of Intellectual Property (SAPI) announced that, throughout the year 2024, new strategies focused on improving care for users and users were implemented, as well as supporting entrepreneurship.

These initiatives strengthened the protection of copyright, patents, marks and protected geographical indications, through effective accompaniment to various sectors related to the key areas of the institution.

Among the actions carried out, a total of 926 training activities throughout the national territory were carried out, which had the participation of 15,852 people.

Of this total, 5 thousand 124 were women and 10,728 men.

Within the framework of the Great Mission Venezuela Women, through the Creative Women’s Program, 5,124 women were trained in the following categories:

  • 1,918 CULTORAS
  • 330 producers
  • 2,618 entrepreneurs
  • 258 innovative

User assistance and new ventures

Finally, with respect to the user service, the aforementioned report stands out that 41 thousand 804 users, users and new ventures, divided into 20,525 women and 21 thousand 279 men.

Of that total, 25,713 people were attended in person, and 16 thousand 091, virtual, which includes social networks, email and messaging.
