The Vice Minister for Europe of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the idea that the Netherlands kept Edmundo González in custody “when he was being judicially required, thus allowing him to avoid his responsibilities before the Venezuelan justice system.”
The Vice Minister for Europe of the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry, Coromoto Godoy, delivered a note of protest to the chargé d’affaires of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Robert Schuddeboom, to reject what the government calls “interference and illegal conduct by the diplomatic representation,” after it became known that Edmundo González, a candidate for the Presidency of the Unitary Platform, had taken refuge in his house after the elections of July 28.
Godoy wrote in X that the attitude of the Netherlands was “arrogant and unfriendly” and stated that it “covered up the organization and direction of activities against stability and peace by citizen Edmundo González”
Similarly, the Vice Minister for Europe of the Foreign Ministry denied that this embassy kept González in custody “when he was being judicially required, thus allowing him to avoid his responsibilities before the Venezuelan justice system.”
Edmundo González Urrutia was secretly kept in the Dutch diplomatic residence from the days after the presidential elections on July 28 and for more than a month, to protect his safety. This was confirmed by the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, Caspar Veldkamp, in a statement released by his office.
The Netherlands explained that after an urgent request from González, the day after the elections, he was provided hospitality for the necessary time at the residence of the Chargé d’Affaires of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Caracas.
