The blocking of X (formerly Twitter) ordered by Nicolás Maduro in August 2024 generated a wave of criticism internationally. YouTube has also been blocked
The non-governmental organization VE Without Filter has denounced a new intensification of censorship in Venezuela, with the blocking of at least 63 informative web pages during the second half of 2024. This measure, added to the internet and electricity cuts, severely limits Venezuelans’ access to information and restricts freedom of expression.
Among the blocked sites are popular social networks such as X (formerly Twitter) and video platforms such as YouTube. The blocking of X, ordered by Nicolás Maduro in August, generated a wave of international criticism and forced many Venezuelans to use virtual private networks (VPN) to evade censorship.
The situation worsened at the end of November with the blocking of YouTube during a live broadcast of opposition leaderswhich shows, according to VE Sin Filtro, a clear intention to silence dissident voices.
Power outages and internet access
In parallel with the digital blockades, Venezuelans have had to face constant electricity cuts, especially severe in states like Nueva Esparta, where blackouts could last more than 19 hours. These cuts, in addition to affecting the daily lives of citizens, further limit access to information and communications.
Other regions of the country, such as Táchira, Falcón and Carabobo, have also experienced significant drops in internet service, making communication between residents difficult.
