VaxThera, the new plant where Colombia will once again produce vaccines

In Rionegro, Antioquia,work began on the plant VaxThera, for the production of vaccines, which will start operating in 2023.

The new infrastructure will have a investment of 54 million dollars by surah insurance, for the development of a plant with international standards for research, production, distribution and product packaging capacity and to contribute to a timely response to health emergencies, such as that caused by covid-19.

It should be noted that the company VaxThera researches and develops biologicals for the prevention and treatment of emerging infectious diseases in the Latin American region. This company was officially launched in July 2021 and belongs to the Sura Business Group.

Within their portfolio, they have vaccines in development against covid-19, dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, influenza and zika.

Once they start operations, they will fill vials with vaccine and finish the medicine packaging process for distribution (fill and finish), research, development, production and marketing of vaccines and strategic biologicals”, said the Ministry of Health.

With this construction, the VaxThera company will generate more than 500 jobs in the department. In addition to promoting the specialized skills and human talent in the country, “turning Colombia into the epicenter of knowledge, development and innovation around the production of biologicals”, indicated the Presidency of the Republic.

Regarding alliances, the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Fernando Ruiz Gomez, He said that, at the end of 2020, while the negotiations were taking place to bring the vaccines against covid-19 to our country, “we felt the pain of negotiating, suffering and going through so many complexities in a country that had stopped producing vaccines”.

For his part, the president Ivan Duke he reiterated “the need for the country to recover its autonomy from the local production of vaccines that ceased in 1999”.

The president of ProColombia, Flavia Santoro, stated that this bet “seeks to make Colombia a regional hub for the development, production, finishing and packaging of vaccines. The accompaniment of international pharmaceutical companies, such as the case of the Canadian company Providence Therapeutics with VaxThera, contributes substantially to this purpose”.

The president of the company, Jorge Emilio Osorio, andexpressed that: “It is a great day for Colombia and for us. Vaccines have not been produced in Colombia for more than 20 years and today we will take that step, we will create a company that is a project of the Nation”.
