With the expiration of the economic relief created in the pandemic by the Social Investment Law of the government of former President Iván Duque, in 2023 the National Consumption Tax (impoconsumo) will be collected again in Colombia, in establishments dedicated exclusively to the sale of food and beverages, which are registered with the Simple Taxation Regime (RST).

As its name indicates, this tax is applied to the consumption of certain goods and services, and is regulated in the tax statute.
Although the impoconsumo is usually confused with VAT, there are big differences between the two, including that the Value Added Tax is a tax obligation that is discounted on purchases and that is borne by consumers of products or services at the time they pay. the price of the same, which does not affect the costs of the employer, while in the impoconsumo it does affect them, since it is up to the establishment to pay it.

This is a tax that taxes consumption. It implies a percentage of 19% on the price of each item purchased and service received. It is not applied directly to taxpayers’ income, but is collected at the time of the purchase and sale transaction of certain products.
