After the setback, Cruzmaltino remains in 6th place in the standings with five points. Esquadrão de Aço took the vice-leadership of the competition with the same 10 points as Fluminense, which was defeated by 1-0 by Botafogo last Sunday (29) at Maracanã. The top of the standings is occupied by Flamengo, with 11 points.
The match started with Volta Redonda dominating the actions, creating difficulties for Vasco who had his first clear opportunity only in the 14th minute, with Pedro Raul. However, by assuming a more aggressive posture, the team from São Januário offered spaces to the opponent, who did not forgive.
In the 24th minute, full-back Ricardo Sena took advantage of Vasco’s defenders’ indecision to kick hard to overcome goalkeeper Ivan. Ten minutes later, Volta Redonda increased their advantage when Lelê received a deep pass before hitting the Cruzmaltino goalkeeper.
In the final stage, the team led by coach Maurício Barbieri even rehearsed a reaction with the beautiful goal, from the left wing, by Gabriel Pec in the 12th minute. But any chance of recovery was dashed when Pedro Raul saw goalkeeper Jefferson save his penalty kick in the 30th minute.
Vasco will be back on the pitch for the competition starting at 7 pm (Brasília time) next Thursday (2), when it will meet Resende at the São Januário stadium. On the same day, but from 21:10, Volta Redonda receives Fluminense at Raulino de Oliveira.
