Varadero hosts international scrabble tournament

The thirteenth edition of the CubaScrabble International Tournament began this Wednesday at the Tuxpan hotel, in the Varaderowith the participation of players from four countries.

The contest, which is being held for the first time outside of Havana, brings together 26 participants, among which the current world runner-up, the Argentine Horacio Moavro, and the current champion of the contest, the Costa Rican José González, stand out. according to review the agency Latin Press (PL).

Panamanian players and hosts also venture into the fair, the latter led by the five-time national champion Rolando Guadalupe, the publication specifies.

According to the office, among the particularities of CubaScrabble 2023, the inclusion of five Cuban children stands out, in an event that is part of the tournament circuit of the International Federation of Lexicon in Spanish.

The actions of the contest will be extended until April 8, which also has among its objectives to promote the practice of a board game that “becomes an excellent challenge to connect letters, words and develop strategies in a simple and fun dynamic”, he points out. PL.

In scrabble each player tries to earn more points by building words on a board of 15×15 square boxes. Words can be formed, as long as they appear in the standard dictionary, horizontally or vertically and can be crossed.

Some sources place it as the second best-selling board game in the world, only behind the famous Monopoly (Monopoly).

Scrabble was created by Depression-era New York architect Alfred Mosher Butts in the 1930s. Finding himself out of a job, Butts decided to spend his free time doing something that combined his passions for chess, crossword puzzles, and the puzzles.

In Cuba, the game has been gaining in popularity and in 2005 a Cuban promotion group was created with the support of the then Historian of Havana, Eusebio Leal, in the Rubén Martínez Villena Library, in the Havana Historical Center, according to a reportage from the agency IPS.
