Valentine’s Day: Divorces will double this 2026 in Huancayo

Valentine's Day: Divorces will double this 2026 in Huancayo

Today, February 14, thousands of Huancaínos and Huancaínas will exchange flowers and promises of love as part of the Valentine’s Day celebrations. However, although for many the date means an opportunity to reaffirm their affection, others are in the middle of the divorce process; What’s more, in 2026 there is a clear trend towards an increase in separations, according to the Civil Registry Area of the Provincial Municipality of Huancayo.

HEARTBREAK

According to Iván Eguiluz, head of said area, During January alone, 17 divorce requests were registered and so far in February there are already five files under evaluation. To understand the magnitude, 2025 closed with 70 divorces; For this reason, it is expected that this year the separations of Huancaí couples will increase considerably.

“This year, requests have increased. We closed 2025 with 70 resolutions attended to and, so far this year, we have already added more than 20; we project to close averaging twice as many divorces as last year.”detailed the person in charge of Civil Registry.

Couples who choose to divorce do so mainly because of incompatibilities within the marriage; In many cases these are young people who married abruptly or under pressure and who, after a few years of relationship, finally decide to break the relationship.

“The majority of applications are from couples who have been married for five or six years; there are few cases with children or families. The majority are young marriages”Eguiluz explained.

The divorce process is simple: the couple must have been married for at least two years. The procedure requires the presentation of marriage certificates, copies of ID, sworn declarations about children or assets and the payment of a processing fee of 422 soles. Of course, both parties must agree.

“These procedures are by mutual agreement and must be requested by both parties. If one does not want to, it does not proceed and they must go to court. Therefore, we summon them to a reaffirmation hearing where they indicate that they want to end their marriage bond.”reported Iván Eguiluz.

LOVE

But, just as divorces increase, so do marriages, especially those that take into account the superstition of the even year. So far this year, around twenty unions have already been registered and there are reservations in the Civil Registry until November.

“This year it has increased because it is an even year and because we are very gentlemen. In January we have celebrated 14 marriages, in February we have five and today, the day of love, we have two weddings. This year marriages are increasing”said the head of the MPH Civil Registry.

At the end of 2025, the Wanka commune celebrated 156 ordinary marriages and 50 in the mass modality; That is, for new unions, the trend is also upward.

Thus, between divorce requests and the reservation of dates for new weddings, Huancayo today experiences a February 14 full of contrasts: on the one hand, young couples who cannot resist the challenges of life as a couple and, on the other, those who see the even-numbered year cabal as a support or insurance to say “yes, I accept.” The statistics are just an example that, although divorces increase, Huancaínos and Huancaínas never stop looking for love.
