Valentín Díaz, guilty of femicide, is sentenced to 30 years in prison

Valentín Díaz Betancourt, 33, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for being responsible for the murder of his ex-partner Reina Elizabeth Torres, 35.

The sentence against the femicide was handed down in the Specialized Violence Court of the department of Chinandega, in charge of Judge Isabel Mayorga. Díaz will pay her sentence in the Chinandega prison system.

The facts

Valentín Díaz, guilty of femicide, is sentenced to 30 years in prison

The crime was recorded on December 18, 2022, at night, in the Daniel Ortega neighborhood. The victim was moving house and would have ended her relationship with the attacker only 15 days before. Díaz insisted on resuming the relationship, when her wife refused, the now convicted man proceeded to fatally assault her with a knife.

The crime was committed in front of the children of the deceased, who are now orphans.

The femicide, who worked as a bricklayer, was on the run for five days, until he was located by the Police in a community in the department of Masaya.

In Nicaragua, more than 40 femicides have been registered to date. The year 2022 concluded with a total of 66 cases, according to the statistics collected by the Catholic organization for the Right to Decide.
