Valenti wrote a letter to Lacalle Pou on the occasion of the press conference in defense of the “No”.
“I support one of your previous statements, after March 27, there will be a March 28 and almost three years of this government, whose validity no one has questioned nor is it under discussion in this referendum, confirming the democratic responsibility of all Uruguayans,” Valenti expresses in his public letter.
“I waited attentively and anxiously for his speech, I was not thinking mainly about the campaign for the referendum, but rather I tried to put myself in the position of the vast majority of Uruguayans, excluding only the fanatics, who are always dangerous people,” he acknowledges. .
Do not deepen divisions
Remember that his command made a chain for the “Yes”, obviously to win voters for March 27. “That was the main objective, but we also think about the country of the day after, about not deepening divisions that do not help anyone, because in those attitudes you start with the first shovelful of earth and stones and you never know where it ends.”
We try a message of reflection, with our positions, but open to exchanging values and principles. “I ask you to make a great effort, to listen again, especially to Cesar Troncoso’s message, not only is he not aggressive, but he recognizes that we all want the best for Uruguayans and that it is not an easy task to build those roads” , recommends Valenti to Lacalle.
The “Yes” campaign manager said that in addition to the phrases, the tone was not confrontational, it was a respectful Republican debate. “And it was a risk, because around the election date things get tense, but you should never underestimate the citizens of this country, they are very shrewd and have a lot of civic experience, so everything we receive from the supporters of the ‘Yes ‘ were positive reactions.”
However, Valenti questions that at the Lacalle conference, “he did not take a single one of the many opportunities to speak to all Uruguayans, as corresponds to the President of the Republic. On the contrary, he made an intransigent defense of the LUC, without any opening, with very gross forgetfulness such as the increase in fuels and all its consequences in the increase in the cost of living, or the subject of the denaturalization of the National Institute of Colonization and about adoptions directly lacked the truth”.
“Even on the insecurity on which they have concentrated their campaign, they did not know how to read the many surveys that they must be giving them, people do not feel at all that the improvement in security has been consolidated and a large majority thinks and feels that we are the same or worse than before”, questions Valenti.
In addition, he questioned that Lacalle “did not speak at all about the future of the country, about where we are going, what are the great and important projects, to give us a boost, a call to national effort. Nothing at all”.
“Mr. President, you, who we all recognize have excellent communication skills, wasted time and an unbeatable opportunity to position yourself and the presidential institution in its rightful place, even defending one of the options,” he said.
He warned: “There are things that must be said before the vote, because they have value with any of the possible results. The country, in the differences, indisputable and necessary in a democracy, what it always needs are statesmen, republicans in their deepest convictions and with more sensitivity towards the whole society than towards their own supporters. Every time that weakened, the price we all paid was very high.”
