The Ministry of Health and Social Protection indicated that, thanks to vaccination, prevented the deaths of at least 22,000 adults older than 60 years.

This new result came out of the study Effectiveness of vaccines against covid-19 applied in Colombia – Esperanza Cohort, developed by the Department of Epidemiology and Demography and the Department of Medicines and Health Technologies.
Thus, Julián Fernández, director of Epidemiology, explained that “this is a conservative estimate, as we only considered the impact of full-schedule vaccination and probably the number of deaths averted is actually higher”.
It should be noted that older adults, prior to arrival and application of vaccines, contributed 77.7% of the deaths for this disease.
(What’s more: Covid: in one year, 63.7% of the Colombian population is immunized).
In that order of ideas, the recent report argued that if vaccination had not been started in the country, mortality for this age group would have been 48% higher than the one registered during 2021.
The deaths in people over 80 years of age that were avoided amounted to 9,619, becoming the group that benefited the most in terms of life expectancy.
