On the first day of vaccination against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in the capital of São Paulo, this Saturday (6), 624 pregnant women were immunized, informed the city hall.
The immunization cycle from 28 weeks of gestation mainly targets babies, who receive antibodies directly from their mothers, and prevents serious infections caused by RSV in babies under 6 months of age.
The implementation of this vaccine is very important for the health of babies under 6 months of age. Vaccinating pregnant women guarantees the protection of newborns in the first months of life, when they are most vulnerable and can develop serious forms of the disease”, highlighted, in a note, the Health Surveillance coordinator, Mariana Araújo.
RSV is responsible for around 75% of bronchiolitis cases and 40% of pneumonia cases in children under two years of age, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
Starting this Monday (8), immunization will take place in all basic health units (UBSs), from 7am to 7pm. The availability of the vaccine can be consulted on the platform Keeping an eye on the queue.
To be vaccinated, pregnant women must have an identification document and proof of 28 weeks of gestation, issued during prenatal care.
