The vaccination against cholera began this Wednesday in the Dominican Republic, after the arrival this week of a first batch of some 85,000 doses thanks to the support of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
As reported by the Dominican Vice Minister of Collective Health, Eladio Pérez, these vaccines will be distributed “the best possible way”especially in places where cholera cases have been detected in the country, where there are 36 confirmed infections.
He referred specifically to two areas of Santo Domingo, La Zurza and Villa Liberaciónin which the epidemiological fence of ten houses close to the place where infections have been registered will be immunized on average.
Likewise, the entire border area with Haiti will be protected as it is more vulnerable, after in the neighboring country, according to the latest official data, the disease has caused 511 deaths and 1,938 cases have been confirmed out of a total of 25,803 suspects since cholera reappeared there less than four months ago.
In the Dominican Republic, this oral vaccine, from Korea, will also be applied to people with comorbidities in places where outbreaks have been discovered.
Likewise, the health personnel that assists those affected or suspected, schools located in the risk areas of La Zurza and Villa Liberación, teachers, administrative employees and children with the consent of their parents or guardians, Public Health workers who participate in field investigations and laboratory, military and people at risk deprived of liberty.
Today the Ministry of Public Health notified five new cases of cholera in the Dominican Republic, where there are also eleven people admitted with suspicions of the disease.
The first case was reported last October and corresponded to a 32-year-old woman of Haitian nationality who had returned from her country at the time.
