Approaches to Monreal
On Sunday, July 10, Senator Ricardo Monreal Ávila announced for the first time, in a meeting with his supporters at the “Arroyo” Bullring, that if the method to select Morena’s presidential standard-bearer is a poll, “it doesn’t make sense participate because whoever they want to win will win, it will not be democratic and there we will not lend ourselves to any farce”.
In addition, he conditioned his permanence in Morena: “as long as there is respect, a level floor, equitable rules”, although he was clear in saying that “never” he will confront President Andrés Manuel López Obrador or history.
In an interview, Espinosa Cházaro commented that Monreal has indeed met with the opposition leaders and has given them just that warning, which will not be measured in a survey of this type within Morena to define the presidential candidacy of that party.
As a result of this, the national leaders of the PAN, Marko Cortés, of the PRI, Moreno Cárdenas and of the PRD, Jesús Zambrano, considered it feasible for Monreal to join the opposition bloc, although not necessarily to the presidential candidacy or another candidacy.
In an interview on July 14, Zambrano stated: “we must not close off any possibility of this happening (…) it is not that we are going to accept him back here with the PRD, but rather that I am talking about the possibility in the face of a national need to come together on a big front.
From the meeting with Monreal, the PRD established that it was before the elections on June 5, and “it was to exchange points of view, reflections, concerns and of course we also share them, because indeed there is a delicate situation in the country and also they are living it inside Morena”.
“People like Monreal who were here at the time in the democratic field fighting against authoritarianism, against imposition”, it is necessary, he indicated, that they understand that if democracy is being undermined there “here we can find points of confluence, we can find possibilities to walk together.”
The leader of the PRI, Moreno Cárdenas, also considered the integration of Monreal viable. In an interview with Carlos Alazraki for his YouTube channel Atypical TeVe, the PRI declared that he sees the senator as closer to the opposition than to Morena.
“He is a sensible person, he is a person who has extensive knowledge and a history of many years in the Mexican political system and I believe that he has a vision of what we can all build as a country. Of course, and I don’t want to speak for him, or even say so, because I have affection and respect for him, but Ricardo is going to be on the side of the correct history for the country, I have no doubt about that, and if he knows that the correct side is where we are all here, he is going to play”, he said.
With nuances, Cortés Mendoza saw it as possible for the Morenoite senator to work on the opposition side, but ruled out that he would do so as a presidential candidate. In Va por México there is room for “everyone who sees that this government is a failure, and who says so clearly,” said the PAN member.
But he rejected that it is only for leaving Morena to jump to another party without recognizing the failure of the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“Not only those who, due to personal interests or not achieving an objective, look for another option, which is what other parties then do, are picking at rejected politicians in theirs, no, there must be a clear indication that this government has been a resounding failure in the economy, in security, in health and that there has been a setback in all matters”, warned the PAN member.
