USDA authorizes importation of Jalisco avocado to the United States

Guadalajara, Jalisco. After a decade of trying, the producers of Jalisco avocado will be able to export this fruit to the American Union after the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the United States of the Agriculture department of that country (USDA-APHIS for its acronym in English), authorized the entry of Hass avocado grown in this state.

The notification on the conclusion of the inspection and certification of more than 8,000 hectares of avocado in more than 600 orchards, was sent this Monday to the head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER) of Jalisco, Ana Lucía Camacho Sevilla, the federal secretary of Agriculture, Víctor Villalobos Arámbula, and the president of the Association of Exporting Producers of Avocado of Jalisco (APEAJAL), Javier Medina Villanueva.

According to the document, USDA-APHIS approved the export of the fruit from both Jalisco and Michoacán, which can be shipped to any continental port in the United States, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, after being subject to ordinary review.

Faced with this, the head of SADER in the state highlighted that the Agency for Health, Safety and Agrifood Quality of Jalisco (ASICA), will participate as a regulatory entity that allows “guaranteeing that avocado and the industry have an orderly growth, in terms of not only of sustainability, but also of maintaining an open work plan”.

According to figures from APEAJAL, Jalisco avocado growers are prepared to initially export 3,000 to 5,000 weekly tons of Hass avocado to the United States, whose demand is around 16,000 tons.

Official figures from the federal SADER indicate that the Jalisco avocado sector exports more than 113,000 tons of the fruit each year to 30 countries, including Canada, Japan, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom. , Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay, Portugal and Germany.
