Madrid Spain.- The United States government praised the Cuban people for their “indomitable determination in the face of oppression” as they commemorate one year since the historic anti-government demonstrations of July 11.
Through a release published this Monday by the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, the determination and courage of Cubans in their persistent struggle for respect for human rights and their perseverance in the face of repression during a historic year were recognized.
“Our two peoples share strong family and friendship ties, as well as a fervent desire for freedom, prosperity and a bright future for our children. Through these ties and aspirations, we will continue to support the Cuban people in their fight for democracy, including holding officials of the Cuban regime accountable for human rights abuses, condemning restrictions on fundamental freedoms and labor rights , calling for the unconditional release of political prisoners and urging our partners to do the same,” the document stated.
The US government also expressed its admiration for the events of July 11, 2021, “when tens of thousands of you took to the streets to make your voices heard in defense of human rights, fundamental freedoms and the possibility of a better life. ”.
The statement also denounced the regime for the sentences imposed on the 11J protesters: “It is unacceptable that today, a year after these demonstrations, more than 700 participants are still imprisoned. The United States will always be on the side of the Cuban people in their aspiration to build a better future.”
This Monday, different cities around the world marched to commemorate the historic day, on behalf of those who could not do so in Cuba due to the repression and operations that the regime has increased during the last week to stop any attempt to demonstrate.
Nevertheless, “Despite the repression that the dictatorship has unleashed these days, citizens of the island took to the streets to distribute leaflets with messages calling for freedom for political prisoners, supporting a National Strike and urging Cubans to continue protesting for their rights.”
In addition, dozens of citizens hung yellow objects with the number “11J” on the facades of their houses.
One year after July 11, 2021, the Cuban government keeps hundreds of people in prison, including minors, for having gone out to demonstrate that day.
