USA: Proud Boys leader pleads not guilty

Cuban-American Enrique Tarrio, the Proud Boys leader indicted last month in one of the major Jan. 6 trials, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to conspiracy and other felony charges.

Tarrío pleaded guilty in a virtual hearing that took place nearly a month after he was arrested and charged with conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding.

Prosecutors allege that he led members of his far-right group in a scheme intended to prevent Congress from certifying President Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, despite the fact that Tarrío was not physically present on Capitol Hill on March 6. January.

The Proud Boys leader faces charges along with five other defendants from the same group. One of its members, Matthew Greene, pleaded guilty in December to one count of conspiracy and one count of obstructing official proceedings and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.

If convicted, Tarrío faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.
