USA: More than 30 thousand people died last year on the roads due to speeding

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration specified that deaths from traffic accidents have increased by 12%, this figure being the highest percentage for decades.

According to the data revealed by the agency, it is estimated that around 31,720 people died on the highways of the United States, only last year. Fatal accidents are first caused by drivers who drive with excessive speed.

The director of the road safety office of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety expressed his feelings to the Washington Post, specifying that they expected deaths on the roads to decrease due to the pandemic because people stayed home, but It has been the opposite, as time has progressed, more and more fatal accidents have been recorded.

Minnesota has had a huge spike in deaths. In 2019 they registered 266 deaths and last year there were 369. On the other hand, Nebraska was one of the states with the lowest number of deaths due to traffic accidents, according to the State Department of Transportation.

For Steven Cliff, deputy administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, he pointed out that this has to change to avoid thousands of human losses in traffic accidents, since it is necessary to transform for road safety. Although some experts attribute these tragedies to changes in people’s behavior since the coronavirus first spread.
