The embassy of the United States (USA) for Venezuela expressed on the afternoon of this Monday, December 16, its “outrage” at the death, in the custody of the Venezuelan State, of the political prisoners Jesús Rafael Álvarez and Osgual Alexander González Pérez; whom he described as “most recent victims of (Nicolás) Maduro’s repression.”

This December 16, the number of political prisoners – detained in the context of the post-election protests on July 28 – rose to three. The first was Jesús Martínez Medina, in Anzoátegui, on November 14; then, in Carabobo, Jesús Rafael Álvarez, on December 14; and Osgual Alexander González Pérez, this December 16.
Who are the deceased?
Jesus Martinez Medina (36 years old) was arrested on July 29, in Anzoátegui, one day after having been a witness at the Guzmán Bastardo school during the presidential election. He was detained at a police headquarters in Lechería. He suffered from heart problems and type II diabetes. Due to his illnesses and the conditions of confinement, abscesses developed on his skin.
Jesús Rafael Álvarez (44) was arrested on August 2, in El Callao, Bolívar state, along with his wife, Anny Suárez. Both were transferred to a National Guard (GN) headquarters in Puerto Ordaz. A month later, his father, Jesús Rafael, was transferred to the Tocuyito prison. The causes of his death are still unknown. He was buried on the morning of Sunday, December 15, in an event that was “supervised” by officials governmental.
Osgual Alexander Gonzalez Perez (43) was arrested on August 1, along with his 19-year-old son, in the state of Lara during the post-election protests. Both sent to Tocuyito prison. The young man is still deprived of liberty.
During the first days of arbitrary confinement, González Pérez presented symptoms of depression. Then, in the first days of December, he had to be hospitalized due to severe pain in his abdominal area that seemed like hepatitis and not renal colic, as the authorities said. His relatives point out that, due to the symptoms he presented, his true diagnosis was Hepatitis A.
New review of measures
This Monday morning, the Attorney General, Tarek William Saab, reported that the review of 179 new measures against detainees in the context of post-election demonstrations.
On December 13, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, asked the Venezuelan authorities to review the arrests of all people detained after the presidential elections, and urged the authorities to release all political prisoners without delaybefore and after July 28.
Nearly 2,000 people were arrested between July 28 and August 3 in Venezuela, including more than 100 minors.
