An intruder was shot to death by the Secret Service at the Peruvian Embassy in Washington DC on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The man was caught breaking windows at the Peruvian ambassador’s residence, DC Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee told reporters.

Family members of the ambassador were inside and called police shortly after 8 am, Contee said.

The suspect was shot “after a confrontation” in the backyard of the residence, according to the Secret Service. Contee said that he had thrown a metal object at police.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He appeared to be between 20 and 30 years old.

The motive for the raid was not immediately clear. Police believe the incident was random and not a direct attack on the ambassador.

The Embassy released the following statement: “The Embassy of Peru regrets to report that today a person entered the official residence without authorization, causing material damage to the property. Said person was shot by the Secret Service. The ambassador, his family, the staff of the residence and the agents of the Secret Service are safe, and the fact is being investigated by the competent authorities».

Such incidents are rare in the neighborhood, the police chief said.
