William Segade Herrera was arrested in Indiana and accumulates sentences for drug trafficking, aggression and robbery.
Madrid, Spain.- The Immigration and Customs Control Service (ICEfor its acronym in English) included the Cuban citizen William Segade Herrera in a list of the “illegal foreign criminals” currently detained in the United States, according to a Statement released by the Department of National Security (DHS).
Segade Herrera, who does not have legal immigration status in the country, is in custody at the Speedway Slammer detention center, in the state of Indiana. The place was inaugurated this year as part of a cooperation between the federal government and the state authorities to house immigrants with serious criminal records.
According to official information, the Cuban accumulates multiple convictions for crimes such as drug trafficking, aggravated aggression, domestic violence, theft and possession of weapons. Its criminal history also includes positions for possession of methamphetamine and repeated theft in commercial establishments.
ICE justified the inclusion of Segade Herrera on the list under a campaign that seeks to “show the most dangerous cases” within the American immigration system, as part of a communication strategy that emphasizes the danger of certain criminal profiles.
The DHS statement, entitled “Meet Sub of the Worsst of the Worsst “Worst of the worst” undocumented immigrants, including gang members, repeat offenders and drug traffickers. However, the text does not identify each detainee individually, so the information about the Cuban citizen comes from ICE sources linked to the announcement.
Cuban repatriation
The news highlights again the difficulties of the United States to deport Cuban citizens with criminal record, due to the refusal of the government of the island to accept the return of migrants considered “inadmissible” or who left the country before January 2017, when the policy of “dry feet/wet feet” was repealed.
In those cases, Washington has resorted to third countries to execute deportations when Havana refuses to receive its nationals. However, according to official data, 999 Cubans have been repatriated to the island so far from 2025, in compliance with bilateral migratory agreements.
The inclusion of the name of a Cuban in the list released by the ICE occurs in a context of growing migratory pressure and the resurgence of controls on persons without legal status in the United States, especially those with criminal records.
