Last Sunday, January 26, diplomatic relations between Colombia and the United States went through a critical moment after President Gustavo Petro refused to allow the entry of North American airplanes with deported Colombian migrants. In response, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced a series of retaliation measures, including tariffs, the revocation of visas to officials of the Colombian government and the prohibition of trips to the United States.
This confrontation led to a day of uncertainty in which both nations accused each other, threatening to start a possible commercial war.

However, hours later, both governments managed to reach an agreement that ended the diplomatic crisis. From the White House they reported that Colombia accepted the terms imposed by Trump, including the unrestricted reception of Colombian citizens deported from the United States. According to the statement, the sanctions and tariffs will remain in reserve as long as Colombia complies with the agreed terms.

However, a measure will remain in force: the suspension of visa procedures. The White House conditioned the lifting of this restriction to the success of the first deportened flight. “The sanctions of visas and intensified inspections of the Office of Customs and Border Protection will remain in force until the first plane loaded with Colombian deportees is successfully returned,” they said.
Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo confirmed the agreement in a press conference. According to Murillo, the Colombian government considers the conflict overcome and promised to work with the United States to strengthen diplomatic channels. He also said that high -level meetings will be held in Washington to address bilateral relations.
